The Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) is a leading research institute devoted to research on two frontier areas of 21st century science. The first of these concerns a broad spectrum of advanced nano-scale materials of relevance to a variety of applications; the other deals with soft matter, a prime example of which is provided by liquid crystals that from an inseparable component of our digital society. The uniqueness of CeNS lies in research being carried out to realize smart nano-soft materials emerging from a judicious combination of the best of these fields.
With a view to stimulating and nurturing scientific curiosity in the young minds, CeNS conducts a science initiation programme aimed at students. Under the programme, the centre invites a small group of high school/+2 students for a half-day visit to its campus and participation in innovative science learning activities, including Lab Tours, brief inspiring talks by the researchers of CeNS, and in-house demonstration experiments. Lecture-demonstrations are also held, on request, at school as well as colleges. These activities are intended to induce/generate in the young minds an aptitude for relating daily life experiences to scientific principles and at the same time learn to appreciate the importance of scientific research.
