‘Greenhouse’ the Technology Business Incubator Project, Arkavathi Campus, Shivanapura

The Centre launched its Technology Laboratory, part of the Technology Business Incubator project “Greenhouse” at its news campus “Arkavathi” located at Shivanapura, Bengaluru North, on 17 August 2019. This unique project funded by the Nano Mission, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, was inaugurated by Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary to Government of India, DST, in the esteemed presence of Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS. Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT-Delhi and the Chairman of the governing council of CeNS, himself a pioneer in translating lab level research to technology, appreciated the move to have incubator which will bridge the gap between the research institutions and industry. The governing council members and several eminent scientists from premier research institutes such as IISc, JNCASR, IACS, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay participated in the event. Prof. G.U. Kulkarni, Director, CeNS, welcomed the gathering and took the dignitaries around for a guided tour of the Greenhouse.

Launch of new Materials and Technology Laboratories at CeNS

The state-of-the-art Materials Laboratory was inaugurated by Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS at the pristine campus ‘Arkavathi’ of the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) located in Shivanapura, Bengaluru North. Prof. Rao in his address as the guest of honor emphasized the importance of the city as the science capital of the country and urged the researchers especially the young to deviate from the well-trodden path and accept challenges to work on problems of societal relevance and concentrate on, for example, health and energy sectors. On this occasion, the Centre was proud to launch its Technology Laboratory, part of the Technology Business Incubator project “Greenhouse”. This unique project funded by the Nano Mission, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, was launched by the chief guest Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary to Government of India, DST. Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT-Delhi and the Chairman of the governing council of CeNS, himself a pioneer in translating lab level research to technology, appreciated the move to have incubator which will bridge the gap between the research institutions and industry, much needed for India. Several luminaries in the arena of Science and Technology from premier institutes like IISc, JNCASR, IACS, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay etc. participated in the event. The Director, Prof. G.U. Kulkarni welcomed the gathering and took the dignitaries around for a guided tour of the laboratories.

 

CeNS prototype stall at “Tata Steel Collaboratory 2019” as part of the Tata Steel Annual Business Plan meeting

CeNS being a collaborator with Tata Steel Ltd. had received invitation to represent the stall to demonstrate the prototypes developed by CeNS during an Expo, “Tata Steel Collaboratory2019” as part of the Tata Steel Annual Business Plan meeting at JW Marriott Hotel, Kolkata on 18 May 2019. The following three prototypes were demonstrated:

1. Smart Window
2. EMI shielding
3. Photo – Detector

Senior management of Tata Steel Limited as well as participants of the ABPvisited the stall and appreciated the efforts. The interaction was fruitful leading to collaborative pathways.

Dr. C. V. Yelamaggad received FRSC award.

Dr. C. V. Yelamaggad has been awarded the prestigious "FRSC" (Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry), Royal Society of Chemistry, London, in view of his outstanding contribution in chemical sciences, especially efforts put in field of liquid crystal chemistry.

Ms. Brindhu Malani S awarded the "Best Poster Award" in Topical Meeting on Advances in Photonics (TMAP, 2019) conducted at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) Bhubaneshwar from 29-30, March 2019.

Ms. Brindhu Malani S has been awarded the "Best Poster Prize" for her poster entitled "Optical studies on graded gold nanostructure arrays on glass substrate" at NISER, Bhubaneshwar

Mr. Suman Kundu awarded the "Best Poster Prize"at International Conference on 'Frontiers in Materials from Basic Science to Real-time Applications' at CNMS, JAIN University

 Mr. Suman Kundu has been awarded the 'Best Poster Prize' for his poster entitled Ultrafast Humidity Sensing by Supramolecular Nanofibre for Real-time Breath and Hydration Observation using Smart-Phone or PC” at CNMS, JAIN University, Bengaluru.

SASTRA-CNR Rao Award for Excellence in Chemistry & Materials Sciences - Professor G. U. Kulkarni

On occasion of National Science day, Prof. G. U. Kulkarni received the "SASTRA-CNR Rao Award for Excellence in Chemistry & Materials Sciences" in recognition to his contributions in the development of new strategies for nanodevice fabrication including molecular systems, at SASTRA University, Thanjavur on 28 February 2019.

Prof. G. U. Kulkarni received the MRSI-Distinguished Lectureship Award (2019-20), at the 30th Annual General Meeting of MRSI and the First Indian Materials Conclave held at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India during February 12-15, 2019.

Dr. C.V.Yelamaggad received MRSI Medal-2019

Materials Research Society of India(MRSI) has conferred the MRSI medal on Dr. C.V. Yelamaggad  on February 12, 2019, in recognition of his significant contribution in the filed of Material Science and Engineering.

Dr. Veena Prasad was invited as the chief guest for the Annual Day function at BEL High School, Jalahalli, Bengaluru, held on 20th December 2018.

9th MRS Trilateral conference on Advances in Nanomaterials: Energy, Water and Healthcare

The 9th MRS Trilateral conference on Advances in Nanomaterials: Energy, Water and Healthcare, was inaugurated on 22nd October 2018 at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru. Prof. G U Kulkarni, Director, CeNS, welcomed dignitaries and delegates from the three participating countries, namely, China, Singapore and India to the three-day event. This was followed by the inaugural remarks by Prof. C N R Rao, FRS, National Research Professor, JNCASR, Bengaluru, who stressed the importance of materials research not only in the energy, water and health sectors but also in the field of environment and climate changes that affect the living conditions in several cities like Delhi and Bejing. Prof. B V R Chowdari, President MRS Singapore, Prof. Suresh Das, President, MRS India and Prof. Hu Zheng, representing MRS China gave opening remarks which set the tone of the conference going. The conference had six sessions with seventeen invited talks and a poster session, wherein about thirty-five delegates presented their works related to the topic of applications of nanomaterials in water desalination and purification, water harvesting, solar cells and batteries for energy generation and storage, water splitting for energy generation, biomedical applications such as controlled drug delivery, treatment of abnormal scars, tissue adhesives etc.
